PRINCIPALS REPORT
Dear families,
I cannot believe how quickly the weeks are rushing by! Our students are very settled and working well in their classrooms and playing fairly with each other in the playground.
This fortnight, our social skills topic has been “Don’t take the bait”. We have focussed on strategies that we can use when other people say or do things that upset us. Classes have been having lots of discussions about this topic as well as participating in role plays. Thanks to Mr Lockey and Mr Patulny’s classes who shared some of their role plays with us at our last assembly.
We have Book Week coming up in week 5. As in previous years, we will have a special whole school assembly where all of our classes will present an item – even our kinders! The students will have an early lunch on that day to allow us to start at 1.15pm. We would love to see lots of families come along but we’ll be sure to take lots of photos for those who can’t.
We also have the school fair coming up very soon. The school association have been working very hard organising stall holders and approaching businesses for donations. All money raised goes toward making improvements to our school and playground. Parents are encouraged to volunteer an hour of their time to help out on a stall on the afternoon of the fair. Sign-up sheets will go up in the front foyer very soon. No skills or experience necessary!
Next week, families will be invited to complete a School Satisfaction Survey. This survey provides staff, parents and grade 6 students with the opportunity to reflect on our progress, to celebrate our successes and make improvements where they are most needed. I would encourage everyone to have their say as this feedback is an important part of making sure that our school is the very best that it can be. The surveys can be completed online or a paper version filled out. Either way, it is completely confidential. More information will be sent home with students next week as well as being posted on our facebook site.

FIRE SAFETY
A firefighter from the Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) is visiting our school from 27th – 30th August to present a Home Fire Safety Program to our Prep to Grade 6 students.
Kindergarten students, whilst not receiving a structured lesson, can expect a visit from the firefighter who will leave some free fun activites for the students to complete.
The age appropriate program is designed to raise fire awareness in children and includes fun in class activities, videos, activity books and giveaways.

Parents and other family members are also encouraged to participate by reading the information and assisting your child with the after school activities.
The TFS aims to deliver appropriate fire safety education to every primary school child in Tasmania and is part of the TFS’s ongoing commitment to create a fire safe Tasmania.

Football and Netball Trials
Over the past week a number of Risdon Vale Primary School’s Grade 5/6 students have been trialling for the Southern Primary Schools Sports Association Winter netball and football carnivals.
On Friday Jayden Walker, Brock Page and Cameron Kirkby travelled to Dodges Ferry for football training and a trial game. All of the boys acquitted themselves and Jayden Walker was selected in the Bowen Eagles team for the second year running. Well done Jayden this is a wonderful achievement!
Then last Wednesday Ella Jeffrey-Oakley, Ebonie Jenkins, Brook DeJong, Hayley Rogers, Mateka Menzies and Kate Hynes travelled to Sorell for trial matches for the Southern Green Netball Team. All of the girls did a great job and the coach commented on their terrific attitude and determination.
Well done to all of our Gr 5/6 students who trialled.

Great Cycle Challenge
“To Fight Kids Cancer” – Craig Burr
Hi all,
For some crazy reason, I've signed up for the 2018 Great Cycle Challenge to ride this October to fight kids' cancer!
My goal is to ride 1,000 km throughout the month (gulp).
It won't be easy, it will take over my weekends and my life. Hmmm, I probably should have thought a bit more about what I was getting myself into. :)
So why do it? I am taking on this challenge for one reason...to kick cancer's butt!
Because cancer is the largest killer of children from disease in Australia - 3 children die of cancer every week.
Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.
Cancer has taken too many young lives and robbed too many kids of their childhood. And frankly, it needs to be taught a lesson. So I'm riding to give cancer a good old-fashioned butt-kicking and give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.
Please support me by making a donation through my personal fundraising page:
https://greatcyclechallenge.com.au/Riders/CraigBurr?utm_source=dashboard&utm_content=email_h&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=gcc_template_fundraising_ind
All funds raised will support Children's Medical Research Institute to continue their work in developing treatments and finding a cure for childhood cancer.
Thanks so much for your support.
