PRINCIPALS REPORT
Before school safety
There have been many concerns raised over the past few weeks regarding student safety before school at the bike track, skate park and ‘mushroom park’. There have been up to thirty bikes/scooters with riders of varying ages and abilities using these areas with many accidents/near misses. Many parents are not aware that these areas are not part of school grounds and, as such, we do not have control over the safety of these areas or who uses them. Duty of care for students begins from 8:30am but unfortunately we do not have the manpower to provide supervision of areas that are not within our school grounds. In the interest of student safety, students who ride to school will no longer be able to return to the bike/skate park areas before school and nor will children be able to play in the mushroom park before school. If parents wish to take their children to play in these areas before dropping them to school, and stay to supervise them, they are of course welcome to.
Playtimes
You may be aware that we have been trialling a reduced playtime at lunch. Teachers had expressed concern that many issues, arguments and problems were occurring in the last part of the lunch playtime, perhaps because the students were becoming tired and frustrated with one another. Since shortening the playtime to 20 minutes, we have noticed a huge reduction in incidents and the students are having more time in their classrooms learning. In addition to the 20 minute playtime, students are provided with designated time in their classrooms to eat their recess and lunch and to visit the canteen prior to going outside to play. This has also led to a reduction in the amount of litter in the school yard.
Playground
Children in grades 3-6 use the mushroom park and skate park as play areas at recess and lunch times. Many students and teachers have raised concerns about the safety of these areas. Our newly elected Student Representative Council will be tackling this issue over the coming weeks. You may like to discuss this issue with your children as we would like to weigh up all of the pros and cons before making a decision on whether or not we continue to use these areas.
In exciting news, the School Association is currently looking at options for installing much-needed shaded areas in the ECE playground. We are open to suggestions as to what would be best and plan on making a decision at the next meeting (everyone welcome!)
Improving Student Wellbeing and Safety
One of our main priorities this year is improving student wellbeing and safety. One of the ways we are doing this is by spending teaching time on developing the social and emotional wellbeing of our students. This past fortnight we have been learning about how to recognise our own feelings and when we are becoming upset or angry. We are also teaching students strategies for managing these emotions. In order to support students when they are upset or angry, we have established ‘Take a Break’ spaces in every classroom where students can go to keep themselves and others safe until they are ready to engage in learning. Here are some of our ‘Take a Break’ spaces:

Pakoras – Indian vegetable fritters
Equipment: Measuring cups, Measuring spoons, Large mixing bowl, Mixing spoon, Grater, Chopping boards, knives, plate, frypan, tongs, kitchen paper, serving platter
2 cups mixed vegetables, grated or finely chopped -
potato, sweet potato, cauliflower, carrot
¼ cup chick pea flour
½ cup plain flour
1 medium onion, finely diced
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon garam masala
½ teaspoon turmeric
½ teaspoon ginger
½ teaspoon coriander powder
½ teaspoon cumin seeds
pinch of red chilli powder
½ cup tablespoons cold water, may need more
Oil for shallow frying
Method
- Peel and grate (or very finely chop) the vegetables and put into a medium size bowl.
- In a large bowl, measure all vegetables and spices then add the chickpea flour. Mix well. Add a small amount of water a little at a time to create a thick batter that coats all the vegetables.
- Heat up the oil in a small frypan to a medium heat. Test your oil is hot enough by dropping a little batter into the oil. If it browns and rises immediately then it is ready.
- Very carefully drop tablespoon spoonfuls of the mixture into the oil and fry until golden brown.
- Once golden brown and crispy underneath, use two spoons to turn over the pakoras and cook the other side. Remove from the oil and set on some kitchen paper to drain off some of the oil.
- Cool on a wire rack.
