From the Principal
We have a school that is very settled, with wonderful teaching and learning well underway in every classroom. As I walk through the school, it is a calm and orderly place. It is certainly very busy, but I notice that every member of staff and every student is very focused on having a great year.
We have had the windows repaired from the vandalism over the Summer and our pool liner has been replaced. So, even though it was a bit depressing seeing some damage, at least we can work together to make things right. After every set back, we have the capacity to bounce back better than ever, but we should not have to work that hard to create a great school. Our energy and money would be better spent on new equipment and great learning experiences.
The grade 5/6 camp was excellent. The students participated so well and positively. Thank you to you at home for getting your children equipped for camp and all the paper work in to us. We would like to get your feedback on the camp because we would like to know what went well and areas we could improve on. We will arrange a way in which we might be able to survey parents and carers, as well as students and staff. Shirley Barron put on the best food that I have ever seen at any school camp (and I’ve seen a few). Our teachers, Teacher Aides and admin staff, as well as Rob did so much extra work to make it all happen. Teachers do not get paid for camp – their time, over-night is voluntarily given. Without teachers volunteering their time we could not do a camp. Next time we have a school camp, if each staff member heard just one person say “thank you”, it would make a great deal of difference.
This week we have our Athletics Carnival. It is always such a great event. I remember last year how exciting it was to have so many parents and friends attend the carnival. Again, thank you to all staff for the extra work that goes into these important school events. And thank you those at home who not only help the children get ready for the carnival but also come along to support on the day. The weather is certainly with us this year!
Kinder has settled in with Ms Bronwyn Daly running a wonderful program for our young learners. I know that each parent/carer met with Ms Daly prior to the start of the year to make sure that the individual needs of each child can be met. Your partnership with us is so vital to the learning of these little ones.
Our assembly last Monday was a huge success with Amy Dickson, the saxophonist with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, teaching our children to breathe long and gently like an elephant. It is a calming technique for all of us. Southern Cross News and Win TV were with us and Connor Downham did a fabulous interview for TV.
Our school assemblies are so important for celebrating each week with you. We begin at 1.50pm in the Open Area on a Monday. Please do come along. Next week we are hoping to celebrate the achievements of the Athletics Carnival and the announcement of our school Captains and Vice Captains. Each week we will try to make sure there is some extra-special guest to see, hear or celebrate.
Coming up we have Clean Up Australia Day. Well, we can’t do the clean up on the actual day because of various other events but Mr Lockey’s Grade 5/6 class are organizing for ECE and Primary to participate later next week. I have been approached by parents who would like to organize a team of parents to clean up the creek and skate-park areas. Mr Lockey is the contact point for this and he will put out more information soon.
We also have Friday activities beginning this week after lunch, with a wonderful range of volunteers offering different enjoyable activities for the Grade 3-6 students.
On the topic of volunteers, we are looking for volunteers to work with us throughout this year. It does not matter if you are only available for a few hours a week; any help would be so gratefully appreciated. Sometimes it is about working in a classroom or helping with an activity or event. Just contact us and speak with Mrs Griffiths. We would love to hear from you.
Regards, Libby Robinson

Parents
Discover why parents are raving about our online course that teaches how to successfully manage kids’ behaviour in just 3 hours… and much more.
Making parenting easier.
The Talk Less Listen More online parenting course is designed to make parenting your 2-12 year old easier and to help you successfully manage their difficult behaviour.
Drawing on 27 years’ experience as a psychologist, teacher and parenting expert, I’ll help you to quickly learn simple, practical strategies that will make a BIG difference to your child’s behaviour by teaching them to develop self-control.
– Michael Hawton, MAPS:
By the end of this course you will know how to:
- Help your kids not to overreact.
- Build your kids’ emotional maturity and resilience for greater social and academic success.
- Improve your parenting confidence and strengthen family bonds.
This is a fast, convenient and affordable way that you and your partner can learn together:
It’s great for dads, who research has found to be 8 times more likely to attend an online course then attend a community-based program with their partner.
Here’s what we’ll cover in the course:
- Three big ideas
- What is self-regulation?
- Understanding childhood development
- Too much information: what happens when there’s too much talking and too much emotion
- Sorting behaviour: what to do and how to respond to different types of behaviour
- Negative reinforcement and how to change patterns of behaviour
- How to deal with resistance to change
- Three choices: ABNs and the signal to stop
- Introducing the new system to your family
- Time out
- To apologise or not?
- Three strategies and how to choose one
- Emotion coaching in practice
- How to encourage wanted behaviour
- Building bonds with your child
